Sherman Williams Freed From Prison

How many of you remember the Sherman Shake?  For those too young to remember, it was the signature touchdown dance of Alabama running back, Sherman Williams.  Williams holds a special place in Alabama football history scoring the first touchdown in the 1992 Sugar Bowl, the game that ultimately decided the National Championship that year.  After a successful college career, he was drafted by The Dallas Cowboys where he spent the next 4 years.

In 2000, Williams traded in his famous #20 jersey for inmate no. 07520-003 when he was convicted for conspiracy to distribute marijuana and passing counterfeit currency.  During the investigation,
police seized over 1,000 pounds of marijuana that had been brought from Texas to the Mobile, AL area.

During his 14 year prison sentence, Williams was never too far away from football.  Still an avid fan
of the Crimson Tide, he caught as many games on television as he could including the National Championship victories against Texas, LSU, and Notre Dame.  In a 2012 interview with The Tuscaloosa News, Williams stated, "I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play a game that I love so much for one of the highest-quality programs in all of college sports.  I am sure one of the best decisions I have ever made was when I accepted my scholarship offer to attend the University of Alabama.  That was no mistake".

Released just yesterday, Williams' terms include 4 years probation and partnering with the Mobile County Public School system to develop a program warning middle school students about the dangers of drug use.  After serving such a harsh prison sentence, he has an opportunity to help others by telling his story.  I'm expecting great things from the man who stole my heart when he made that 2 yard run into the endzone in New Orleans such a long time ago.
