Petition Demanding Investigation Into Winston Rape Case Gaining Widespread Support
The Tallahassee Police Department may soon realize that rape victims aren't the only people subject to getting raked over the coals. A Florida woman has started a petition asking the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the Tallahassee Police Department's handling of the Jameis Winston case.
Just days before the 2013 Heisman Ceremony, prosecutors announced there wasn't enough evidence to charge Winston. However, the TPD had only handed the case over to the State Attorney's office just weeks earlier. Coincidentally, just 1 day after the media had submitted an open records request regarding Winston & 11 months after the rape was reported. Many have expressed outrage over the way the TPD handled the allegations, citing preferential treatment of the 5 star FSU quarterback.
Maureen Hamrock, a St. Augustine mother & rape survivor, is leading the charge by attempting to attain the 35,000 signatures needed to open an investigation into TPD tactics. Hamrock stated, "As a rape survivor, I know how traumatizing it must have been for this young woman to wait all that time for police to act while she was forced to attend the same school as her accused rapist. As a Florida mom, I need to know that police take sexual assault reports seriously and are following proper investigative procedures no matter who the accused person is or how many football games he has won". Statistics show that over 60% of rapes go unreported each year in the United States. Clearly, the TPD's handling of this high profile case has done nothing to turn this staggering statistic around.

Kudos to Hamrock for taking a stand & being the voice for rape victims everywhere. No matter what opinion anyone has regarding Winston's guilt or innocence, I think we all can agree that more could have been done by the TPD. And nothing about that is acceptable.
Thanks for stopping by, y'all... Roll Tide! Roll Maureen!
